Rather than serving as a straightforward combat reward, these area effects are deeply entangled with the franchise's core stealth systems: they generate noise that alerts guards, cast light that exposes the player, and trigger environmental reactions that can chain into further detection.

The mechanic appears across multiple entries in the series, from the oil-and-fire interactions in the early Looking Glass titles to the more explicit dynamite and explosive tools in Thief (2014). In every case, the design intent is the same: splash damage is a high-risk, high-utility option that forces the player to weigh the immediate tactical benefit against the prolonged stealth penalty of being seen or heard.

Splash damage—whether it is a stick of dynamite cracking a locked gate or a glob of oil catching flame and consuming a crate of guards' weapons—represents a deliberate departure from that ideal. The patrol had just passed the south corridor, and the next sweep would be two minutes out. He bit the end off the dynamite stick, set it against the gate's hinge, and lit the fuse with a single match.

The crack was not loud. It was not quiet. It was the sound of a small, contained violence, and it was enough. The gate shuddered, one hinge sheared free, and the door swung inward on a groan of metal. But the sound had already left the room. It was in the corridor. It was in the heads of the two guards on the upper catwalk, who were turning, who were reaching for their swords.

Garrett was already moving. He did not look back. The match was still hissing in his hand, and the light it cast was painting his face in the dark for one more heartbeat than he needed. He let it go, and the dark took him back.

Reader's Guide

The rule: when you deploy an explosive or ignite a flammable area, the damage and destruction apply to a radius around the impact point, not just the single target. Objects, barriers, and enemies within that radius all take effect. Simultaneously, the event generates a noise value and a light value that propagate outward through the level's detection systems.

At the keyboard, this means that using a splash-damage tool is never a free action. In Thief (2014), for example, you might place a stick of dynamite against a locked gate in a warehouse level. The explosion breaks the gate, yes—but the noise spike means every guard within a substantial radius will investigate, and the brief flash of light means any guard with a line of sight to the blast will see you. You have solved one problem and created three others. Your noise meter, which you had been keeping low by moving through shadow and avoiding metal floors, is now maxed out. You must wait, or find a new route, before the patrol resets.

The design intent is to make splash damage a last resort within the stealth framework. The game rewards you for finding the silent, invisible solution. It does not punish you for using the loud one, but it makes the rest of the level harder, noisier, and more visible. The splash is a trade, and the trade is always in the game's favor.
