The Undercity

A drowned cathedral of stone and living light, where the plague was born.

The Undercity

The Undercity is a vast underground cavern complex located beneath the city of Karnstein, serving as a major gameplay area in Thief: Deadly Shadows. It is a sprawling network of natural grottos, ancient stone architecture, and subterranean waterways that together form a hidden civilization of tunnels, chambers, and sacred spaces far below the surface world.

Within the narrative of Thief: Deadly Shadows, the Undercity is where Garrett descends to trace the origin of a mysterious plague ravaging Karnstein. Its depths hold the source of the corruption, making it the climactic setting of the game's story and a showcase for the series' signature stealth gameplay in a fully enclosed, vertically layered environment.

Lore & Background

Beneath the cobblestones and market squares of Karnstein, the earth opens into a cathedral of raw geology. The Undercity is not a single chamber but a vast, branching system of natural caverns, flooded grottos, and ancient carved passages that predate the surface city by millennia. Over time, the spaces were adapted—stone shelves cut for habitation, channels dug to direct underground streams, and small shrines raised where the rock face narrows into something that feels like a nave.

The Undercity is lit not by torches or oil but by colonies of bioluminescent organisms that cling to the wet stone and drift in the black water. The light they cast is cold and blue-green, turning every surface into a faintly glowing relief and making the deeper passages feel like the interior of a living thing. The air is heavy, mineral, and cold. Water drips in irregular rhythms that Garrett must track, because in the Undercity, sound carries differently than above ground—echoes stretch, and a single dropped coin can announce his position across a hundred yards of open grotto.

It is here, in the deepest and most sacred of the Undercity's chambers, that the source of Karnstein's plague is kept. The corruption is not a simple poison but something older, something that has been growing in the dark water and the living rock for longer than the city above has existed. Garrett's task is not merely to kill a guard or pick a lock but to navigate a hostile, enclosed ecosystem where every shadow conceals a threat and every pool of still water might be a trap.

In Their Own Story

The rope runs out three fathoms below the last handhold, and Garrett lets himself drop the final stretch into the dark. The air changes immediately—colder, wetter, tasting of iron and deep earth. He lands in a shallow pool, the water black and still, and for a long moment the only sound is his own breathing and the slow drip of something far above.

Then the light finds him. Not a flame. Not a lantern. A soft, pulsing blue-green glow seeping up from the stone floor, from the walls, from the tips of pale fungal fronds that crowd the ceiling like a frozen forest. The Undercity breathes around him, and in that breath he hears water moving through channels he cannot see, and something else—something large—shifting in the dark beyond the glow. He steadies his crossbow. The plague is down here. He can feel it in the way the air tastes wrong, the way the bioluminescence flickers where it should not. He steps forward into the blue.

Reader's Guide

In Thief: Deadly Shadows, Garrett enters the Undercity to track down the source of the plague that has been killing citizens of Karnstein. The surface city's corruption traces back through the earth to this subterranean complex, making it the narrative and mechanical climax of the game.

The Undercity is a vertically layered environment of natural caverns, carved stone passages, and flooded grottos. Movement is often vertical—climbing up wet rock faces, dropping through gaps, or wading through shallow water that muddies the sound of footsteps. The layout rewards careful observation: narrow tunnels open into vast open chambers, and the player must constantly reorient using the bioluminescent glow that replaces all artificial lighting.

Notable set-pieces include the transition from the relatively structured, carved upper passages into the wilder, more organic lower caverns; water-filled sections where Garrett must manage his stamina and silence while moving through pools; and the deepest sacred chambers where the plague's source is kept, surrounded by the most hostile encounters in the game.

The Undercity appears exclusively in Thief: Deadly Shadows. Its visual identity—cold blue-green bioluminescence, wet reflective stone, dripping water, and oppressive darkness—distinguishes it sharply from the warmer, torch-lit interiors of the earlier two Thief games and makes it one of the most atmospherically distinct locations in the series.
