The Palace

One gem, one palace, one man who never wants to be seen.

The Palace

"The Palace" is the opening mission of Thief (1998), the stealth-action game developed by Looking Glass Studios and published by Eidos Interactive. It introduces the player to Garrett, a master thief operating in a dark, magic-less fantasy city, and establishes the core loop of the series: infiltrate a secured location, steal a specific object, and escape without being detected.

As the first mission, it functions as both a tutorial and a tonal statement. The player is dropped into a noble's residence thick with armed guards, alert dogs, and light-sensitive patrols, learning to read the environment, time their movements, and exploit the security gaps that Garrett's reputation demands he exploit. The mission's success or failure sets the emotional and mechanical baseline for the rest of the campaign.

Lore & Background

In the world of Thief, power is not wielded through sorcery but through gold, guilds, and the cold arithmetic of ownership. The upper city is a lattice of marble palaces and fortified towers where lords keep their wealth behind layers of armed men, barking hounds, and cleverly placed sensors. The palace Garrett is sent into is one such seat of privilege: a multi-level residence where the lord's personal treasury sits behind a chain of corridors, guard posts, and watchful eyes.

Garrett himself is a figure of whispered legend in the lower districts. He does not break in through the front door; he does not fight. He reads a room the way a scholar reads a page—counting the beats of a guard's patrol, noting where a torch throws a cone of light across a stone floor, remembering which floorboard creaks. His reputation is his currency. Every successful job in a palace like this one feeds a cycle: the lord's wealth is thinned, the guards are humiliated, and Garrett's name grows another syllable in the mouths of those who will hire him next.

The absence of magic in this world is deliberate. There is no spell to silence a dog or turn a guard invisible. Every obstacle must be solved with timing, positioning, and the quiet patience of a man who has done this a hundred times before. The palace, for all its grandeur, is just another lock waiting for the right hand.

In Their Own Story

The rain has stopped, but the cobblestones still shine like wet coin. Garrett presses his back against the palace wall, feeling the cold seep through his coat, and watches the guard on the second balcony finish his slow arc. Torchlight sweeps the courtyard in a lazy arc. Three seconds of shadow. He moves.

Inside, the air is warmer, thick with the smell of oiled wood and the faint sweetness of the lord's imported wine. A dog lifts its head at the far end of the corridor, ears rotating. Garrett stops. Holds his breath. The dog loses interest, returns to its mat. He keeps walking, one hand trailing along the stonework, counting paces to the next junction.

The gem is smaller than he expected. He lifts it from its velvet cradle, feels the weight of it—nothing, really, just a small cold stone—and tucks it into his coat. Behind him, a guard's boot strikes the floor. Garrett is already three corridors away, already a shadow peeling off the wall, already gone.

Reader's Guide

Objective: Infiltrate the noble's palace, locate and steal the target gem, and exit without raising a sustained alarm.

Key set-pieces: The courtyard approach, where you learn to time patrols around torch-bearing guards and a pair of alert dogs. The interior corridors, which introduce line-of-sight cones and the importance of staying in shadow. The treasury or storage area where the gem is kept, guarded by a tighter security rotation. The escape route, which tests whether you can retrace your path under the pressure of a raised alert level.

Narrative beats: The mission opens with Garrett receiving the contract, establishing his role as a professional rather than a rogue. Mid-mission, a brief interaction (or near-interaction) with a guard or servant reinforces the social hierarchy Garrett exploits. The closing beat is the clean exit—Garrett vanishing into the city's underbelly with the gem, the palace left unaware of how close it came to being breached.

[SPOILER — later mission context] The Palace sets the template for the remaining six missions: each escalates in security complexity, introduces new enemy types or environmental hazards, and tightens the narrative thread connecting Garrett's contracts to a larger conspiracy in the city.

General tips: Prioritize silence over speed. A creaking floorboard or a startled dog resets your position far more costly than a slow, patient approach. Learn the patrol rhythms before committing to a route.
