The King's Conspiracy

The throne is a mask; the conspiracy is the crown.

The King's Conspiracy

The King's Conspiracy is a central story arc in Thief (1998), the stealth-action game developed by Looking Glass Studios. In it, Garrett—a master thief operating in a grim, rain-soaked fantasy city—unravels the true intentions of the King, who has been using Garrett and the criminal underworld as pawns in a far darker scheme involving forbidden power. The arc transforms the game from a series of heists into a confrontation with the source of the city's corruption itself.

Rather than a single discrete mission, the conspiracy threads through multiple stages of Garrett's journey, culminating in his direct challenge to the King's authority and the revelation that the man who rules the city is its greatest criminal.

Lore & Background

In the world of Thief, the city is a vertical labyrinth of guild halls, sewers, noble estates, and the King's own citadel. The King presents himself as the lawful ruler who keeps order among the warring guilds, but beneath that veneer he pursues a personal ambition rooted in dark, forbidden power. His agents infiltrate every institution—guilds, temples, the very ranks of Garrett's own trade—turning the city's criminal economy into a network that serves his design.

Garrett, who has long treated the King as a distant patron and source of lucrative contracts, begins to notice inconsistencies: locked chambers that should be empty, whispered orders that contradict public proclamations, and the quiet disappearance of those who ask too many questions. The Master of Thieves, a figure Garrett once regarded as a rival, is drawn into the same web, and the lines between employer and predator blur until Garrett must decide whether to complete his final contract or dismantle the conspiracy entirely.

The thematic core of the arc is the corruption of authority. The King does not rule through open tyranny but through the same mechanisms Garrett uses—secrecy, misdirection, and the exploitation of those who trust the system. Stopping him requires Garrett to turn his own craft against the architecture of power itself.

In Their Own Story

The rain hammers the slate rooftops in long, silver sheets. Garrett crouches on the parapet, his mask catching the dim glow of a distant torch, and watches the King's citadel breathe with the slow rhythm of a sleeping beast. Below, in the courtyard, a procession of robed figures files past the gate—too many, too quiet, carrying something that does not reflect the light the way steel should.

He has stolen for this man before. Paid well. Told to look the other way. But tonight the other way leads to a door he was never meant to find, and behind that door the King is not a king at all. Garrett checks his lockpick, feels the cold weight of his blade, and lets himself drop from the wall into the dark. The conspiracy has a shape now, and it is wearing a crown.

Reader's Guide

The King's Conspiracy unfolds across several linked stages rather than a single linear mission. Early on, Garrett is contracted to retrieve items from the King's inner quarters—ostensibly a routine job. The set-pieces involve navigating the citadel's lower levels, bypassing guards using sound and shadow, and accessing locked vaults. Narrative beats here establish the King as generous, distant, and seemingly legitimate.

[SPOILER: Later stages] As Garrett gains access to restricted archives and private chambers, the tone shifts. Documents and overheard conversations reveal the King's true project: a weapon or power source drawn from forbidden sources, protected by constructs and loyalists who will kill without hesitation. Garrett must now operate with the entire citadel hostile, using stealth not to avoid detection for a job, but to survive while gathering proof or a means to counter the King's power.

[SPOILER: Climax] The final confrontation takes place in the heart of the citadel. Garrett must navigate the King's inner sanctum, deal with the Master of Thieves' role in the scheme, and either destroy the source of the King's power or confront the King directly. The resolution redefines Garrett's relationship to the city: he is no longer a hired hand but the one who broke the system from the inside.

The connective thread across the arc is Garrett's evolving agency. He begins as a servant of the King's will and ends as the arbiter of the city's fate, his skills turned from instruments of profit to instruments of justice.
